What are the requirements to apply for ILR?

You must satisfy the following requirements to apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK:

  • Continuous Lawful Residence - You must meet the continuous residency requirements. This means that you cannot have been outside the UK for more than 180 days in a 12-month period.
  • Life in the UK Test - You need to pass the Life in the UK Test as part of your application for ILR or settlement in the UK.
  • English Language Test - You need to prove your knowledge of the English language if you’re 18 or over and applying for ILR to settle in the UK. You do not need to prove your knowledge of English in certain circumstances.
